Volunteers needed to survey swifts and their nests in the Oxford City area (only). No experience necessary - training provided.
The Oxford Swift City Group is organising a survey of swifts around Oxford City (strictly based on the City Council boundaries).
The time commitment is relatively small. We ask volunteers to survey for one hour around sunset on two evenings a month in May, June and July – when swifts are here and nesting. Volunteers are assigned a half-kilometre square patch of the city to survey for swifts nesting or flying low.
Training will be provided to help identify swifts and where they nest – a 45 minute session.
The numbers of swifts have dropped by over 50% in 20 years which is why we need to understand where they are – and where they are not. The information helps city planners advise people on installing nest boxes and nest bricks in new buildings to provide places for them to nest.
If interested, send us your postcode and we can find the nearest available survey square to you. Or if you are mobile and happy to take on any square in the city area please let us know.
We will also organise during the summer informal get-togethers of surveyors to meep and swap ideas and stories. There will also be a gathering at the end of the season to see the results and celebrate the work.
No specialist skills needed. Training will explain how to identify swifts from similar birds and how to find their nest sites.
You must be over 16 years old
Open from Wednesday 1st May 2019 to Wednesday 31st July 2019
